How do I record my purchases and sales?
From the Journal, use the “Record a purchase” and “Record a sale” buttons. Enter the security, the date, the quantity, the price actually paid or received, the fees charged by your broker, and the type of account involved (ordinary securities account, tax-advantaged plan, and so on).
These buttons are for declaring a transaction you have ALREADY carried out at your broker. Earnnest places no orders and buys or sells nothing: you place your orders at your broker as usual, then record them here to keep your history up to date.
If you already have many past transactions, importing your broker's history file saves you from re-entering everything. After that, you only need to record new transactions by hand.
One important point: always enter the price actually executed, not the price you were aiming for. Even a small discrepancy feeds straight through to the amount calculated.
